West Zambezi GMA – 38,070 sq. km
Zambia’s largest GMA, incorporates two National Parks the Liuwa Plain and Sioma Ngwezi. It lies on the west bank of the Zambezi river and comprises the whole portion west of the Zambezi river, of the western part of Western Province.
The area is largely sandy, with floodplain, pools, and stands of endemic Zambezi teak. It has mopane and acacia woodland interspersed grasslands and thickets. The major river is the Zambezi, with the Lunaginga and Luambimba rivers flowing into it.
Wildlife found in the GMA includes Blue Wildebeest, Greater Kudu, Red Lechwe, Tsessebe, Steinbok, African Elephant, Common Duiker, Bushbuck , Impala, Roan antelope, Sable antelope, Southern Giraffe, Spotted Hyena and Zebra. Though in small numbers.
Mufunta – 5,104 sq. km
This GMA was established in 2006. Though heavily settled in its northern part, it still has pristine wilderness in the south – covered in miombo, termitaria, kalahari and munga woodland. There are areas of grassland, dambos and thickets.
Wildlife present though numbers are few include African Elephant, African Buffalo, Sable antelope, Greater Kudu, Bushbuck, Waterbuck, Reedbuck, Oribi and Common Duiker.
